Summer is now officially over and we are into the first "proper" month of autumn moths, so the Lunar Underwing invasion will no doubt get underway very soon. Last night's collection in the garden here comprised 287 moths of 44 species, of which
Agriphila tristella (12),
Acentria ephemerella (30), Large Yellow Underwing (26), Setaceous Hebrew Character (35), Square-spot Rustic (77), Common Wainscot (16) & Centre-barred Sallow (12) were those which achieved double-digit counts - numbers of Vine's Rustic seem to have dropped off now with just four appearing in the catch. The only notables amongst the remainder were a second-brood Short-cloaked Moth and a smart Sallow f.
flavescens. Short-cloaked doesn't seem to produce a second brood on a regular basis but I have previously had a couple of late examples in the garden (23rd September 2006 and 3rd October 2014)
