New garden species for the year have continued to trickle in over the past week:  Ancylis badiana (4th), Brown-spot Pinion (6th), Pammene populana & Yellow-line Quaker (both 8th), Acleris rhombana (9th) and finally, last night, Black Rustic and the stunner below:

Clifden Nonpareil, Westcott 10th September

Having been so windy I wasn't expecting much at all so this was such a welcome sight sitting on the outside of the trap at 5am in the morning!  For the past week or two I've made sure that a large Activia yogurt pot (other brands are available...) has been on stand-by for just such an eventuality when I close up the trap before dawn.  The rest of last night's catch of 124 moths comprised Epiphyas postvittana (1), Eudonia angustea (1), Agriphila tristella (2), Catoptria falsella (3), Small Dusty Wave (1), Garden Carpet (1), Brimstone Moth (3), Light Emerald (1), Heart & Dart (5), Large Yellow Underwing (20), Lesser Yellow Underwing (2), Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing (1), Setaceous Hebrew Character (27), Square-spot Rustic (28), Feathered Gothic (1), Smoky Wainscot (5), Common Wainscot (6), Black Rustic (1), Centre-barred Sallow (5), Sallow (1), Copper Underwing (2), Svensson's Copper Underwing (1), Angle Shades (1), Uncertain (2 second brood examples) & Snout (2).

  1. Like Mark Griffiths, this is the second year in a row for the garden and at current progress it seems likely that we'll all be seeing it on a regular basis reasonably soon.
