Hummingbird Hawk-moth

Today (Tuesday 23th Feb) in my garden in Berghers Hill South Bucks feeding on daphne. Did it overwinter?

  1. Wow - all my sightings have been between June and October! Looking at the records for Bucks I see we've had five post-millennium records in March (earliest 13th March 2016 in Radnage) and just one in April before the usual influxes commence in late-May, so unless Martin knows otherwise you've just seen the earliest ever for Bucks. It is impossible to know for sure whether these have over-wintered or are migrants (for the last few days we've actually had winds which favour migration), but I think there must be a good chance that the moth is now attempting to over-winter here.

  2. On the BC Hummer sightings page there are already about 10 from 2021, mostly from 18-23 Feb. Earliest was 29 Jan.
