A caterpillar question

I found this caterpillar when moving some leaf mould at the end of February. Therefore no idea what it was feeding on. Any suggestions welcome.

Andy Newbold, Sibford Ferris, Oxon.

  1. I suspect that is Angle Shades, Andy. Probably the most common noctuid larva found at this time of year.

  2. Thank you both. Judging from its size I would guess it was just about ready to pupate.
