Humming

I happily watched a Hummingbird Hawk nectaring on phlox in the garden on Saturday, resigned to the fact that my camera was indoors having its battery charged. They are a nightmare (for me) to photograph, anyhow. Two nice compensations on Saturday night/Sunday morning: the Black Arches above in the eggboxes and the Canary-shouldered Thorn below on a hydrangea nearby.  Martin Wainwright, Thrupp, Oxon

  1. You are not alone, Martin - there's a lot of luck involved in photographing Hummers. I find that as soon as I've noticed one and grabbed the camera it seems to move to the highest blooms of the buddleia and stays well out of range!

  2. Absolutely! The only time I've had something approaching success was in Greece where I had a whole afternoon and a lot of HB Hs
