Last night's catch included 3 Merveille-du-Jour and a latish Burnished Brass. There were also a couple of Diamond-back moths which made me realise how few I have seen this year (10 in total).
There was also this rather large (13mm) micro that I have failed to identify.

Hi Andy,
ReplyDeleteI don't know for sure what your tortrix is but at this time of year there aren't all that many to choose from. I suspect that it will turn out to be a poorly-marked example of Epinotia maculana but definitely one to keep back for dissection. If I'm correct I'd suggest it would be very good as a garden record - it is an aspen feeder and I've had only ever seen it in mature woodland.
Thank you once again. I did wonder about E. maculana from the illustrations in the field guide. My August and September moths are with Peter now so it will be the first one in the final batch of the year.
