I had provisionally identified this as a rather late (9/11/20) Aspilapteryx tringipennella but I am now wondering if it is Caloptilia rufipennella as it has a distinct reddish tinge. (About 6.5mm in length).

ReplyDeleteI agree that it isn't tringipennella. It is not very clear from your image, I'm afraid, but I'd say that the moth is most likely to be rufipennella. The spots on the wings are fine for that species (in my experience they're there to some degree more often than not, contrary to the description in the field guide which suggests they are rare). The "socks" on rufipennella should be a darker brown than the orangey-brown wings and they should be mottled with white, which is what I think I can see on your moth.
