I caught this small carpet like moth this morning (along with a Chestnut and two Light-brown Apple Moths) in my central Oxford garden. However it resolutely refuses to open its wings. Does anyone have any tips on how to coax it to do so? Alternatively can anyone ID it from the underside? My thoughts are Common Marbled or Spruce Carpet (both regulars in the garden) or perhaps one of the November Moth Agg.

Hi Adam problably Spruce or Grey Pine Carpet. Put it in the fridge for an hour that should do the trick.
ReplyDeleteThanks Martin, it turned out to be a Spruce Carpet. Somone else suggested putting the pot upside down without a lid on a rougher surface that it could more easily cling on to, then lifting the pot a few mm and blowing gently. The combination of a surface on which it could grip and the gentle breeze was enough to get it to settle down.
