I thought this was Northern Winter Moth when I first saw it with those whitish hindwings (first image), but in different lighting the forewings look more brown than I would expect (second image) and not really silky, so I'm no longer sure. It was noticeably larger than the Winter Moths caught at the same time--forewing 14mm left and 16mm right and wingspan 34 mm.
Or am I misidentifying a November moth?
Hi Phil,
ReplyDeleteIt is always easier to decide with the moth in your hand, but looking at those pictures I'd say that was Northern Winter Moth. There's a considerable difference between the forewing and hindwing colours (they're relatively similar in Winter Moth) and the size fits too. Probably not a reliable ID factor but when at rest Northern quite often shows the hindwings protruding well beyond the forewings too, as in your second image.
Thanks Dave,
