Scarce or Mottled Umber?

I think this is a Scarce Umber but I am not certain as it seems to have some features of Mottled.

  1. Hi Andy,

Although slightly worn, that's a typical Scarce Umber which forms a neat triangle when at rest. They vary very little in ground colour or markings whereas Mottled Umbers vary considerably, are usually larger and their wing shape is slightly different so the appearance at rest isn't such a neat triangle.

  2. Thank you. It was a bit the worse for wear thanks to last night's wind and rain. It is the first I've had this year and the earliest by a few weeks.
