Queries from last July

 Hi there,

These two turned up last July and were put into the 'too difficult' folder!

I've rejected Willow Beauty and, I think, Mottled Beauty. So I'm now thinking about Engrailed, Small Engrailed and Square Spot. But the moths arrived in mid-July 2021, which doesn't seem to fit with Square-spot or Small Engrailed. HELP!!

    Hi David,
    Yes, you can rule out Square Spot on flight period (active in May/June), although your moth doesn't actually look like that species anyway. You can also rule out Small Engrailed because it is now generally accepted in this country that we have just one species of Ectropis. That is crepuscularia but with the vernacular name Engrailed. Hope that isn't too confusing!

    Thanks, Dave - got it! So these rather dark forms are not uncommon in crepuscularia?
