Mursley moths

I suddenly started getting more moths last night and they didn't seem to mind the soggy egg boxes. I was thrilled with this lovely Striped Hawkmoth, one I've never seen before.

I think the next one is a Cabbage Moth, but would welcome confirmation.

This pug had a forewing length of 10mm. I think it coul be a Brindled Pug. Is this one I need to hold on to?

Many thanks
Mick Jones

  1. WOW!! What a fantastic catch. I don't think you'll be alone in having not seen one before - I certainly haven't though I often dream of finding something like that in my trap one day. Amazing.

Coming down slightly, the pug is Common Pug and yes to cabbage Moth, yours enviously, Marc :)

  2. I am also hugely envious Mick, never caught one in this country. Well done indeed.

    1. Hi Steve
Yes, no problem. I'm ashamed to say I didn't realise quite how special it was - just thought it was incredibly handsome!

    2. Thanks so much Mick. Your moth is the first record in the UK this year (unusual as that honour usually goes to the coast!). They have been expected in the UK as huge numbers have migrated from N. Africa into Spain and Portugal in the past month.

  4. Fantastic moth, Mick - hope you are savouring it because away from the coast that's a once in a lifetime catch!! This appears to be the fourth Bucks record, the others being from Chesham (1996, John Chainey), Fenny Stratford (2002, Les Hill) and Brill (2009, me!).

    1. Wow! I'm a bit overwhelmed by all this. I released it in the garden (not quite realising the significance) - I wonder if it will come to the light again tonight.

Yours as green as a Merveille du Jour,
