I had a couple of micros in my Aylesbury garden trap this morning, i'm wondering if they are Eudonia lacustrata? Also a possible Uncertain - any advice would be gratefully received! Dave Maunder

Uncertain or Rustic? |
It should be an Uncertain just at the moment, the Rustic comes out soon, but a little bit later in starting than the Uncertain. Lacustrata - yes, because of the space in the middle, but you're right to be wary of Scoparia and their relatives. Andy.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Andy, Dave - lacustrata and Uncertain. Had any success with your local Marsh Pug colony yet?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Andy and Dave. Been over to check for Marsh pugs four times over the last three weeks, but no sign of any this year.
ReplyDeleteAs a general guide, Uncertain moths are slightly richer chestnut brown, rough scaled (not shiny) and often with the dark median band below the 2 stigma - visible in your image. Rustics, as Andy says, will be out in a few days and fly beyond the Uncertain flight period by a good 10 days normally, are a greyer brown, shiny scaled and usually without that median banding. Vine's are even greyer, shiny scaled, with lighter rings around the 2 stigma and with white hindwings. They should be over by now methinks and appear again late summer/early Autumn.
