Stigmella mine on Hawthorn

I found this tenanted mine on Hawthorn today in our garden (Loosley Row, Bucks) and think it's either S. crataegella or S. oxyacanthella. In both species the larva is green and the egg is laid on the underside of the leaf, I've marked the latter with a red line on one of the images.

Could someone please confirm which of the two it is, or if it's something else.

Thanks,
Nigel

  1. Hello Nigel, both of these species have a single generation each year but Stigmella crataegella is found at the mine stage in August while oxyacanthella is at that stage in October. Your mine must therefore be oxyacanthella.

  2. Hi Dave, thanks very much. I must admit that I didn't look at when the mines are active, something to bear in mind in the future.
