I was back in Devon again for a few days earlier this week and had the actinic trap with me. Amongst the moths caught there on Tuesday night was a Flounced Chestnut which reminded me that this seems to be a moth which has largely disappeared from our area. Has anyone recorded it lately? In Bucks it seemed to be fairly well spread across the county up until the end of the 1990s but since the millennium there have been only eight records and the last of those was in the Milton Keynes area in 2015. It would be interesting to know if the same situation is true in Berks and Oxon.

Flounced Chestnut, 2nd October (near Bideford, N.Devon) |
Some of the less well marked specimens of Beaded Chestnut might cause initial confusion but it seems to be a fairly easy moth to identify with its wider wings and slightly hooked wing-tips. The markings, especially that darker outer band, are constant even though the colours may show some degree of variation.
