I've got the specimen and the apps say Hoary but comments in previous posts say I need to check the hindwing. I'm new to this and don't know how to get to see the hindwings without doing damage to the moth as it doesn't want to unfurl itself. Any advice please?
Hello Andy,
ReplyDeleteIn cases like this you are almost certainly going to have to handle the moth to see the hind-wings (grip the thorax gently above and below between thumb and forefinger of one hand and then tease the wings open on one side with the other hand). It does take practice but the moth will invariably survive, albeit with fewer scales than it started with.
Thank you Dave. I've done as you suggested and on the basis of all white hindwings I'll go with Hoary. I'm not sure my spade like hands are best suited to handling moths though!
