Leaf mine

I found this vacated mine today on the upper surface of an oak leaf (Quercus robur). Based on a search through Micro-moth Field Tips and www.leafmines.co.uk., I believe it is probably the mine of Stigmella basiguttella, but would appreciate confirmation...or otherwise.

Thanks

  1. Hello Phil,
Stigmella mines on oak are very difficult to separate and most require a living larva to be present if there's going to be any hope of getting to species (if there is one in your mine then it looks to be deceased). I'm afraid this isn't basiguttella because the frass for that species should fill the mine, whereas your example has left clear borders.
