Two thoughts and a possible Scythris

In my Oxford garden on 23 August came these three that I was not sure of:

1. Dusky brocade? It was with a common rustic and had noticeably longer wings.

2. Zeiraphera isertana?

3. I wonder if this is Scythris limbella, a species I got on 9 August last year as the first for the area for a few years.

  1. Hello Andrew,
The macro isn't easy to do from that picture. The common but quite variable Flounced Rustic sprang to mind as a likely contender at this time of year but the wing shape isn't right for that species so I think it is more than likely just another Common/Lesser Common Rustic. The first micro is Cydia amplana (nice, probably a migrant still in our region), while the second is also a tortrix in the area of Epinotia, possibly something like abbreviana but it is really a bit too far gone to be sure.

  2. Thank you very much, Dave. Most useful comments, as ever. Of the macro it was the wing shape seen next to a 'normal' Common/Lesser Rustic that made me think it was not. As for the Cydia amplana that makes a lot of sense as the copperish colour was noticeable near the wing tips. Happy to leave the last one - the pictures of Epinotia abbreviana vary a lot in colour I see, so it clearly could be. Andrew
