Some moths and a chrysalis...

I had a few NFY moths in my GMS trap last night; Garden Carpet, Common Marbled Carpet, Pale Mottled Willow and this pug which I believe to be Dwarf Pug:

Also, yesterday when doing some hedge trimming, I came across this vacated chrysalis; can anyone tell me what it may have been vacated by? The twig it was attached to was growing very close to the ground.

  1. Hi Dave, the Dwarf Pug looks good to me. The cocoon reminds me a bit of Oak Eggar although it is a little too small for that, so perhaps something else from the same family - December Moth? Is the pupal case still inside the cocoon?

  2. The cocoon appears to be empty inside...I do get December Moth here (although not last winter) but never Oak Eggar! The hedge this came from is predominantly hawthorn, although this twig is hornbeam, and there's also ash and holly in the immediate vicinity.
