Spectacle-y

Abundance continues here with a Cinnabar, Waved Umber and Spectacle  - below -among newcomers for the year last night, plus the visitor above which has me foxed. It looks Spectacle-y in shape with its 'ears' but lacks the actual glasses from the front and seems to have different (and distinctive) patterning. Sorry to add to the ID requests, but help much appreciated, as ever.  Martin Wainwright, Thrupp, Oxon

  1. Martin, have you considered Frosted Green? http://ukmoths.org.uk/species/polyploca-ridens/

  2. Hi Mark - you are brilliant. I usually kick myself when I get the answer as it then seems obvious, but that's not the case with this. I'd never have got it. And I'm pretty sure it's new for me. Many thanks. M

    1. It is indeed Frosted Green and I'd say that was a good garden catch (it is certainly rare in mine). It pays to remember that there are a few noctuid-like moths at the beginning of the field guide pictures as well as a few geometrid-like moths at the very end of them!

  3. Very perceptive, Dave - I'd not looked at the early ones (though as mentioned to Mark, I wouldn't have recognised the FG from the pic (but that is my failing, not Mr Lewington's) Congrats on the excellent moths you've been getting and all best M
