Daytime garden moths

The chilly nights are not great for moths, but there are some day-flying moths enjoying the warm sunshine. In my garden this afternoon I saw several Pyrausta aurata and this lovely Cinnabar.

In addition, there were some longhorn moths flying amongst a cluster of forget-me-nots. I believe they are Cauchas rufimitrella?

  1. Hi Steve, I'd agree with rufimitrella. I've seen a lot of them over the past week, mostly on cuckoo-flower but occasionally on other flowers such as daisy and stitchwort. Nice to have it in your garden.

  2. I saw several rufimitrella today at Burnham. The site has a lot of garden escape plants and the rufimitrella were mostly on the forget-me-nots which are far more abundant than cuckoo-flower or hedge mustard. Must have seen about 20 Cinnabars flying in the sunshine. Also a couple of small yellow underwing.
