White-barred Clearwing

I tried my TIP Lure at Decoy Heath, Berks SU613634 this afternoon and saw 1 White-barred Clearwing. (Although I had several visits I only saw one at a time, and I believe that it was the same individual.) For once this settled on some vegetation nearby and allowed some photos.

I also had 2 Red-belted Clearwings to the CUL lure in my garden at Beenham, Berks this morning.

  1. Hi Derek, a lovely White-barred - one I've yet to see! Are you sure about the other species though? I know both Red-belted and Large Red-belted have been known to come to the CUL lure, but unless it is a trick of the light your specimen appears to have red on the wing-tip which would actually suggest Red-tipped. It is not unknown for clearwings to come to the "wrong" lure!

  2. Hi Dave,

Yes it was nice to get White-barred again as I've only seen one before, two years ago at Decoy. Also nice to finally get some pictures. The other is definitely Red-belted. Large Red-belted has some red at the base of the wing adjacent to the thorax. Also the trap was underneath our apple tree and the nearest Birch/alder heathland is 3 mls away at Bucklebury. The red that you can see in the photo is actually on the underside of the wing - something that caught me out when I first looked at these. So also not Red-tipped. That's one that I am still after.I'll post another photo that might clarify this.
