Red-belted Clearwing

Here's another photo of the Red-belted Clearwing that might be more helpful in IDing it.
As you can see it has no red at the base or the tip of the wing on the upper surface. This is the same individual as in the previous picture. I'm sorry that the other picture was a bit misleading.

Cheers Derek

  1. Can I ask what time of day did the White-barred come to the lure?

  2. Hi Peter,

It came several times between 1.45pm and 2.30pm. I believe that 11.00am - 4.00pm is the period that ALS suggests is the best period.

  3. Oh, I also should have mentioned that it first appeared in less than a minute after I set up the lure and returned at roughly 10 minute intervals after that. Of course I can't be sure that there was only one, but when it finally entered the trap no others appeared over a 20 minute span.

  4. Perfect. We have one site in Herefordshire where it lives and has not been searched for successfully for a few years. I'll go and take the TIP lure down there in the coming days. I've been told that it does usually arrive almost immediately if it is there.

  5. Thanks for posting the extra picture, Derek - that's cleared that up! Seems a little early for Red-belted but so little seems to be known about this family of moths. As it happens, Red-tipped is also flying now so that's another to keep an eye open for. In fact it would be worth trying for any of them now.
