Garden or Galium Carpet?

This appeared in my garden - sadly dead - but can someone please confirm which species it is?

Many thanks.

  1. Hi David

Hmmm - an interesting one! Unless it is just an artifact of the way the picture was taken, the forewing leading edge (on the left wing at any rate) does look to be slightly concave so, especially as it is deceased anyway, it would be very useful indeed if you could please hang on to the specimen and ensure that it gets to Peter Hall for proper examination (via me or Martin Albertini if that's easier). There have been no post-millennium records of Galium Carpet in Bucks and for those very few records that we do have (all 1990s or earlier) there is no supporting evidence. The BC Atlas shows a marked move away from central England towards the coast.

  2. Thanks, Dave,
Oh dear! I discarded the little beast, so can't take this any further. I didn't realise that Galium was so rare - indeed unknown in the county for over 20 years! I shall be more careful next time!!
