My daughter snapped this on the wall of the Lexicon shopping centre in Bracknell today 17th September. I have no good measure of the size or of the underwing…surely not…
Could be! However, I'm not sure I'd want to say definitely whether that was Clifden Nonpareil (fraxini) or Red Underwing (nupta) purely from that image without any indication of size or a view of the hindwings because the forewing markings can be remarkably similar. On fraxini the 'eye-spot' in the centre of the wing is usually (but not always) pure white and if it had been so in the image here that would have sealed it for me, but in this case the spot has a greyish centre which I think is rather more reminiscent of nupta. See what others think.
