Some literature suggest separation is done by seeing if the closed wing covers some of the dark ‘squares’ on opposite wing. The width of the closed wings being narrower that on the Double Square Spot so the wings are pulled tighter across body and therefore obscure some of the markings on opposite wing. Or do you have to look at hind wing to confirm
Hello Iain,
ReplyDeleteThe hind-wing difference is the accepted way of differentiating between these two, although the fore-wing ground colour (more pinkish/purplish in Triple-spotted Clay) helps point you in the right direction. As Peter Hall will tell you, in areas where both occur it soon becomes easy to tell them apart. However, Triple-spotted Clay seems to have all but disappeared from our area.
Thanks for your help with this Dave
ReplyDeleteThis is a Double Square-spot
