Friday's sunny weather brought two Red-tipped Clearwings to my FOR lure (they came to the right one this time!!). Here's one of them.
I'd be interested to know what other species it might be worth trying for on Cholesbury Common near Chesham. So far, I've had 5 Red-belted, which came to the CUL lure and 4 Orange-tailed, which came to the VES lure - all on the same day..
Any guidance gratefully received. Thanks, David
Hi David
ReplyDeleteIf there is bird's-foot trefoil on the common then definitely try the API lure for Six-belted above clumps of the food-plant. It will respond very quickly if it is there (and this is probably the most common clearwing species). Try TIP for Currant Clearwing, which could turn up anywhere, and keep trying VES for Yellow-legged over the next couple of weeks, although you'll probably just get more Orange-tailed! HYL is worth trying now for Raspberry Clearwing which has just started flying and could also turn up anywhere.
Many thanks, Dave - helpful as ever!
