Museum Moths

Left a light on at the museum last night, which got me a reasonable haul, including NFY Brindled Beauty, Clouded Drab, Brindled Pug, Pale Pinion, Diurnea fagella, Twin-spotted Quaker and Nut-tree Tussock.

I'm wondering if this specimen is a White Marked?


Also, any ideas on this caterpillar?

    The moth is a Clouded Drab, Dave.

    Hi Dave,

    I think it is likely to be Garden. Distinctive white hairs and spots can only be seen from the side. Background colours, head colour and timing suggest Garden tiger to me.

      Thanks Alan! I had to announce over the site radio that I was "escorting a caterpillar across the road" to avoid it getting squashed by rampaging children. I have to say I didn't notice any white spots on it but thinking of getting an id was a bit of an afterthought. I have light trapped on the site for 3-4 years and never had Garden Tiger, but I'll keep an eye out over the summer.
