With Dave Wilton's excellent summary of the differences between Brindled Pug and Oak-tree Pug fresh in my memory (from an earlier post of mine), I am going to stick my neck out and suggest the 3 pugs below are Oak-tree Pug. But I could be wrong...
I agree with all three, Steve. Another pointer towards Oak-tree can be a brownish strip along the leading edge of the wing, most obvious in your third picture. At the moment it is relatively easy to separate them because there are only a handful of species flying, but it goes downhill pretty soon - Common, Dwarf and Slender at least could be along any day now to muddy the waters!
Many thanks Dave. As you say, with only Double-striped, Brindled and Oak-tree so far appearing in my garden, all is well, but it all gets much trickier once the others start appearing.
