Early Rustic - North Bucks?

Not particularly well marked, but I was thinking this is a very early Common Rustic agg? - only 2 days after the earliest ever UTB record (1970). Or perhaps Dusky Brocade as it was maybe slightly larger than I would have expected for Common Rustic.

  1. Hi Keith, A Rustic of sorts, but you can just about see a black streak coming out from the base of the wing (usually best seen from the side), so that along with other wing features shows it to be a rather dark Rustic Shoulder-knot. There is a nice illustration from Dave of a similar one on the new Upper Thames Moth Atlas (see side-bar link if you haven't checked it out yet!).

  2. Hi Keith,
It is a rather dark image which I've just spent the last hour playing around with in Photoshop. Like John above, my thought now is that it is just a dark Rustic Shoulder-knot. The basal streak is clear on the right wing at least and to me neither the wing shape nor the shape of the kidney/oval look quite right for Common Rustic.

    1. Thanks both, I'm not sure why Rustic Shoulder-knot wasn't on my radar. I guess I'm just a bit rusty after a gap of nearly seven years. I've had dozens of these in the past!
