Is anyone else getting early Hawk-moths this year? So far I've had two Lime (2nd and 4th) and a Poplar and Eyed on the 3rd - the Eyed being my earliest by 16 days (since 2004).
Also a couple a Pinion-spotted Pugs for good measure!
.
... and a first garden record of beautifully named Pseudoswammerdamia combinella
Hi Keith I've had four or five Poplar Hawk-moths in the garden so far (first was on 1st May) but I've not seen any of the other species yet either here or when trapping away from home. I'm also waiting for my first Pinion-spotted Pug of the year (only had one last year but did get four in 2020 and two in 2018 so they should be around locally). A smart moth!
Hi Keith. It's quite a crossover time at the moment with the Orthosia family hanging on Hebrew Character was the most numerous species on the 4th, but new species appearing each time. I had two Poplar Hawk-moths in my trap in Newton Longville on the 4th, a week earlier than the previous record. I have only had one Eyed Hawk-moth ever, and no Pinion-spotted Pugs.
Another three Poplar Hawks turned up last night (6th) but there's still no sign of any other hawk-moth species. Pinion-spotted Pug duly turned up here last night too, a rather worn specimen. I'm sure this species is being seen far more regularly now than it ever was in the past.

ReplyDeleteLime hawk-moth on 4th is all I have had so far. Never had Eyed Hawk-moth, but I live in hope!
