"White-tailed Pug'

As far as I know the only pugs with white ends to their abdomen are Lime-speck, which this clearly isn't, and Bordered Pug which seems most unlikely and has white thorax which this doesn't.  So it's probably just a worn something else but I would appreciate comments.

  1. Hi Richard, I think that this might well be another Marbled Pug, about which there was a fair bit of correspondence in 2020 when again a relatively worn one was found by Tim Arnold (see https://upperthamesmoths.blogspot.com/search?q=marbled+pug).

  2. Thanks John. Having looked at the 2020 posts I'm sure you are right. I'll keep the moth for Peter Hall to confirm one way or the other.

  3. Hi Richard,
Yes, as John says, that looks good for Marbled Pug. A Google search will bring up some images of it with a white end to the abdomen and there's a nice image of one like that in Brian Hancock's book "Pug Moths of North-west England" (which everyone should have...). Not every Marbled Pug has it but it must be a good indicator if present.

  4. Thanks Dave, I don't have Brian Hancock's book but I do have Riley & Prior's 'British and Irish Pug Moths' which I should have consulted, but didn't. The example shown there does have a white-tipped abdomen.
