Away trapping

Back on 11th August I joined Chris Ivin to go through his 4 MV traps in Whichford Woods (just over the border in Warwickshire). Despite good conditions only 44 macro species were recorded with nothing of any particular note. However, there were some interesting micros the best of which was Aplota palpellus (or palpella).  A new Warwickshire record.  4 individuals were recorded.

Not the best of images as Chis only retained one specimen and was reluctant to let it out of the tube.

  1. Aplota palpella is an Oecophorid I've certainly not come across before. Looking at John Langmaid's micro-moth maps there does seem to be at least one record for VC23 but I don't know if that relates to the 19th Century (when it was more widespread) or something more recent. None are shown for VC22 or VC24 and I believe that is still the case. Not the most exciting of moths to look at but they all count! A very nice find, even if it was just outside our area.

  2. One to look out for. Quite distinctive once you realise it is a moth!
