Despite the weather there was a reasonable return for turning the trap on yesterday. A very autumnal feel with Centre-barred Sallow and Feathered Gothic and a trap dominated by Common Wainscot and Setaceous Hebrew Character. Dark Swordgrass added a little migrant activity. Surprise of the day was a, presumably, rather washed out Sitochroa Palealis - a new garden record. Given the winds were from the north I'm surprised it arrived if it wandered from the local hills?
Hi Andrew,
ReplyDeleteI must admit to being not entirely convinced by the Sitochroa palealis! For what is usually a white moth it seems to have become rather 'dirty' and if I look really hard there's the vague outline of a scalloped cross-line on the left wing at about three-quarters. Difficult to be sure from just one image, but I wonder if it might actually be something like Ostrinia nubilalis.
At the moment over here in Westcott I'd be glad of a Dark Sword-grass or even a Diamond-back! All I've been able to muster migrant-wise recently has been the occasional Rush Veneer (the latest one on the 29th).
Hi Dave,
ReplyDeleteHaving had time to look more closely ( it is deceased) and measure the forewing I believe it is actually a Rusty Dot Pearl which has lost almost all of its colouration. That would also explain the wavy line. Shame though!
