Am I right in thinking that this is a Flounced Rustic, rather worn in parts? Grateful as ever for help. I got nipped by a hornet this morning; luckily I whipped my finger away smartly and it was sleepy so the sting was minimal with no nasty consequences. But a useful warning.

Hi Martin, I agree with Flounced Rustic. At this time of year it pays to be very careful where you put your fingers! I try to avoid putting them in places which haven't been cleared for Hornets. I'm sure to get stung one day but it hasn't happened yet I'm glad to say.
ReplyDeleteHi both,
ReplyDeleteHornets will do their best to avoid stinging you but, of course, if you try to take their food off them, ie moths, they won't like it.
If you get too close to their nest, rather than stinging, they will try "bumping into you" to warn you this is their patch. Stinging is their last resort.
Thanks very much for wise advice - fascinating that they bump into you! The ones I've had in the trap seem to have been too sleepy to eat moths but I've had to chase off wasps which have attacked their fellow residents, usually later in the day if I've left them all together in the eggboxes under a bush. All v best and thanks again M
