It would be useful if you could hang on to that moth for Peter, Steve. I suspect it is just a very odd-looking melanic Common Rustic but it would be well worthwhile getting it checked.
Thanks Dave, the moth is retained for checking. I had several Common Rustics in the same catch, but this one stood out as being different - even the shape didn't seem quite right.
Brown-veined Wainscot can look very like that, see this for comparison (assuming that the website has it correctly identified!): http://insecta.pro/gallery/3727
It's a bit like an aberrant Bright-line Brown-eye
