Any Clearwing is a good Clearwing

I tried the HOR, TIP and VES pheromone lures in the garden at Westcott today but the only taker (apart from a Bumble-bee) was a single male Orange-tailed Clearwing to the VES lure, arrival time somewhere between 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

The last garden record here for this species was in 2011 so, if nothing else, this was a welcome reminder that it is still around in the local area.

    Hi Dave, I put the very same lures out in my garden this Saturday 22nd June. No luck with the HOR but had a Currant Clearwing to the TIP lure at 4pm, and a Yellow-legged Clearwing to the VES at 6:10pm.

    I put roughly the same amount of effort into using the lures in the garden every year but it is very hit and miss as to whether I get any results or not. This seems to have been a really good year for clearwings so far, judging by all the sightings on the blog and the fact that I've already seen four of the five species which have ever been recorded here - just Yellow-legged to go (last seen here in 2014). Raspberry, Hornet and Six-belted are outside possibilities one day, the latter pair being quite common locally. I've even got a little patch of bird's-foot trefoil waiting for Six-belted...!
