Welcome to the blog. The answer to a lot of queries at this particular time of year is "Ingrailed Clay" and I think that applies here too! It is an incredibly variable moth, as I'm sure you will have seen from the number of different illustrations in the field guide. Square-spotted Clay is a darker, chunkier species and isn't usually on the wing until mid-July.
