Clearwings

A couple of good days with Clearwing lures.

Early Wednesday afternoon 2 Orange-tailed to VES and 8 Red-belted to CUL.  Late afternoon 1 Yellow-legged to VES and 1 Red-tipped to FOR.  Most lures then packed away and just LUN and HOR left out.

Much to my surprise and delight 2 Hornet Moths to HOR before 11am this morning. They really do buzz when they fly as well!

  1. Very nice indeed! I've had the standard four which I think everyone should get (Currant, Orange-tailed, Red-belted & Red-tipped) but no joy as yet with Yellow-legged or either of the Hornet species. Yellow-legged is rare here (visits only in 2014 and 2019) but I shall keep trying with the VES lure which so far has only brought me Orange-tailed - makes me wonder about the wisdom of getting the AND lure because Orange-tailed comes so readily to VES. Like you I've tried the HOR lure a couple of times overnight because I never get up early and Hornet Moths emerge early in the day. Still no luck, though, even though the lure is in sight of a line of poplars used by the moth! It is perhaps still a little early yet for Lunar Hornet Moth.

    1. Someone local had a Lunar Hornet a few days ago but I thought it was a little early. Orange-tailed to VES is quite a nuisance once you have ticked them off for the year and are still waiting for Yellow-legged.
