I wonder if this is my first Rustic of the year. Overall it looked rougher and the markings much less distinct. Maybe it's just a worn Uncertain though. Thoughts?

I'm not sure, Mark, and that's rather a worn specimen anyway. I've been recording these as the aggregate at home for a couple of weeks now because I get so many and they can often be very difficult to separate in the hand, let alone from a photo. Uncertain is the easiest to record, not only because it appears first but fresh specimens always have that noticeable dark band across the centre of the forewing. For Rustic I wait until I get one of the very greyish examples because Uncertain is never that colour.
ReplyDeletethanks Dave, I finally decided to mark that one as an Uncertain. I did have one that I feel is a Rustic and going through lots of photos it does stand out as being different, partly shape partly overall presentation.
