Southern?

Is this a reasonable candidate for Southern Wainscot (which would be a Stoke Goldington garden first)? It just stood out against the other Mythimna wainscots as being different.  Unfortunately, I omitted to check for the headband, and underwing features.

  1. Hi Keith,
Hopefully others will comment too, but for me that looks more like Obscure Wainscot. It doesn't have the black "smudge" along the centre of the wing (which can cause confusion between Southern and Smoky) and doesn't seem to have hooked wing-tips. Either species could easily turn up in your garden as a wanderer from the reed-beds around Milton Keynes. While a record for Southern now isn't out of the question, it would still be early for it (it is really a moth of July and August), whereas Obscure is well into its flight period at the moment.

  2. Thanks Dave,
A good moth for the garden! Obscure Wainscot wasn't even on my radar. However, It does look rather like the example in https://britishlepidoptera.weebly.com/302-leucania-obsoleta-obscure-wainscot.html
