This caterpillar found in meadow near the Thames, East of Wytham Field Station (SP476101) on 29 June seems to be a good match for Red Sword-grass, an identity confirmed by Richard Lewington from these photos. Rather unexpected!
Good record! Only ten previous records for Berkshire, most recently in 2018. This will be the first larval record for the county. Would be grateful if you can add the details to iRecord.
Nice though it would be, the larva also looks very like Large Ranunculus and quite similar to several others - I think I'd want to see it reared through before claiming a record!

ReplyDeleteAfraid I wasn't set up for collecting at the time, so it may remain a mystery unless I can refind in the next few days.
