Hello Alan, Your first image shows a fairly heavily-marked Silver-ground Carpet (they can vary quite a lot). There's nothing too extreme about the Common Swift which varies considerably too, with the males ranging from dark brown with obvious white markings to plain buff with no white markings at all (close to your example). The field guide illustrates these quite well.
