Hello Alan, I'm not an expert photographer at all and don't have lots of camera gadgets but I only ever use natural light for photographing moths, mostly done on a north-facing windowsill so that the operation is completed out of direct sunlight.
Although it is not a cheap option I bought an Olympus TG6 camera with a light ring and it has changed my life when it comes to photographing micros. You can zoom in on the smallest micros and the focus stacking feature is excellent. Like Dave I always work in a window out of direct sunlight and always use a neutral background.
