Wood Tiger

Since the millennium there has been but one site for the day-flying Wood Tiger in Bucks and that is the Ivinghoe Hills (in fact it hasn't been seen anywhere else in the county for more than 30 years).  Although the area is well visited by butterfly enthusiasts during its flight season in May and June, this striking moth is rarely recorded so must be very thinly spread.   We were therefore very pleased indeed to hear that Mandy Floyd saw and photographed one on the top of Steps Hill on 2nd June.  Thanks go to Mandy for allowing us to use the image below:

Until this sighting there had been just seven post-millennium records for Bucks, all of them from Ivinghoe Beacon, and this is the first since 2013.
