Could this be . . .

. . . .Hoary Footman? Of course, I wasn't bright enough to look at the hind wing colour, but the forewings are very pale grey and have no strong costal stripe reaching the wing-tip.

Apparently, it's no longer just a coastal species. However, I'm fully expecting to be told it's 'Scarce' and not 'Hoary'! David

  1. Your CMR will have to decide whether to accept the record, but it does look a very good candidate for Hoary. It's easier if kept for dissection.

  2. David, please save a specimen for genitalia check

  3. Hi David,
As Martin says, it would be good to have one dissected from your site. From then onwards a check of the hind wings would be sufficient. While external features can suggest Hoary, for a safe record you do need to handle the moth and check them (and add a note to that effect to your record). The moth could turn up anywhere on our area these days.
