Help please !

5 moths I would like some help/confirmation of ID's please.
No.1 I think is a Hoary Footman
No.2 A large Pug, but struggling with this one.
No.3 I think is a Double-striped Pug.
The next two micro moths are very small and I apologise in advance of the poor quality of photos.
No.4 Two photos of some sort of Ermel maybe.
No.5 Two photos again of some sort of Ermel maybe.

  1. Hello Tony,
The first is indeed a candidate for Hoary Footman but for an acceptable record you'll either need to get it dissected or else handle the moth and look at the hind-wing (white = Hoary, creamy-yellow = Scarce). They cannot be determined safely just on exterior characteristics. I've looked at plenty like yours which have turned out to be faded Scarce Footman once the hind-wings were checked. I'm not sure about the first Pug from that picture but Yarrow is a distinct possibility based on the whitish areas close to the wing-tips. The second Pug is indeed Double-striped. The other four pictures all show the rather variable Blastobasis adustella which is around in large numbers at the moment.

  2. Thanks Dave. The hindwing was indeed white on the footman.
