Struggling again!

 Hi,

I'm struggling with this micro which looks likes it possibly could belong to Gelechiidae. There appears to be a few similar looking species, but I can't quite pin it down.

  1. Hello Keith,
It has the looks of a Caryocolum species to me, although not very well marked - definitely one that needs dissection. I had a likely Caryocolum blandella in a wood north of Buckingham the night before last (if confirmed it would be the third record for Bucks), while the other similar-looking species have not yet been found in the county.

    1. Thanks Dave, Unfortunately I didn't retain it. Something to think about next time!

  2. Indeed, 'pinning them down' is not easy and takes years of practice with very small things, but if you want to know what they are and want records accepted specimens have to be kept sometimes. People sometimes comment that they don't know which ones to keep, but in fact its just a case of reading the books and applying common sense. It really isn't fair to expect experts to make what are effectively guesses from photographs. every time.
