Worminghall, Bucks Update

The garden year list is now on 436 (pending verification). We've had a good run of migrants with Bordered Straw, Pearly Underwing, Dewick's Plusia (maybe a migrant) Vestals, Dark Sword Grass, Rush Veneers, Rusty-dot Pearls, Silver-Ys and the odd Diamond-back moth.

Also plenty of new for gardens (all time list now on a potential 579). Here's a few highlights and some queries since the last post from here.

Our first Bordered Straw (at last- still waiting impatiently for a Striped Hawkmoth)
Pearly Underwing- another new migrant for the garden
Dewick's Plusia- NFG.
Several daytime sightings of these but the first time in the trap (Hummingbird Hawkmoth)
Several Rosy-striped Knot-horns but this was the smartest one
Jersey Tiger. Sounds like others are getting lots of these now but only recently had our first one and still only one or two since. Also had a short and small run of Oak Processionary moths.
Cream-bordered Green Pea- another NFG
Is this Yellow-tipped Dwarf, Elachista bisculella ?
I often don't know where to start with these but closest match in Waring et al appears to be Hemp-agrimony Plume, Adiana microdactyla ?
The closest I could get to this tiny moth is Kent Bent-wing, Phyllocnistis xenia ?
Another maybe , Bittersweet Smudge, Acrolepia autumnitella?

  1. Hi Peter,
Well done on the Bordered Straw and Pearly Underwing. I suspect the Dewick's Plusia will be a resident. Cream-bordered Green Pea is a nice catch as most of the Bucks records seem to come from the wetland areas around Milton Keynes. Your Elachista and Plume would need better images to be sure of what they are (time to upgrade your iPhone?!) and I do wonder if the latter is simply monodactyla. I'm also not sure about your potential Phyllocnistis because it looks quite like Phyllonorycter harrisella too, but I think you are safe with the Acrolepia!

  2. Thanks Dave, one out of three for my best guesses not bad for me :-) I am looking into getting a new camera so hopefully things can only get better. Thanks again.
