Pug problem

Hi,

Wondered if it was possible to get some help with this pug moth. Someone on the pugs in flight Facebook site suggested Golden Rod because of the white mark on the thorax. It was about 20mm across ( a bit less probably). Caught 16/04/20 in Botley Oxford.

Thank you,

Richard

  1. Actually the more I look - now that the day is a bit lighter too - the more I think it might be a grey pug. The white wavy line at the end (termen) of the forewing especially makes me think this. Also the colour

  2. A difficult one, Richard, and probably not do-able with certainty from those pictures. I'm not sure I could rule out White-spotted Pug either. If you check the recent BC atlas you'll also see that Golden-rod Pug is actually very unlikely in any of our three counties.

  3. Thanks Dave, I thought as much. By BC atlas do you mean the book that was recently published or an online resource?

    1. Indeed, the book: "Atlas of Britain & Ireland's Larger Moths". Everyone interested in moths should have a copy!

  4. I have noticed in the Atlas Larch Pug, which also looks similar and has a thorasic white spot. Guess I'll record it as generic pug. I can see by the Atlas book it's unlikely Golden-Rod. Thanks again.
